Happy Birthday Kathy!

Today is Kathryn Beaumont's birthday!  Many happy returns of the day!
Love all the Mary Blair storyboards in the background on this.

David Hall Storyboard - Alice in the White Rabbit's House

Taking some time out from my frantic attempts to prepare for the Dayton Disneyana Show (you should all come!) to post this storyboard by David Hall.
Similar to the previous 'boards posted here and here, this is executed on a very heavy board material, with peg holes along the bottom edge (5 holes), with a pasted on caption.  At some point someone tried to peel up the left edge of the caption to reveal the signature, and in the process tore the caption and lost a segment. The caption should read "The magic takes effect, and in a flash Alice shrinks to her normal size."  The segment "in a fl" is missing.
Like the Bill the Lizard 'board previously posted, this is very nicely inked.
Studio notations on the back identify this as sketch #446 for feature 1017 by David Hall, filed on Dec. 14, 1939.  If you look at the previous studio notations on the two other 'boards, you get an idea of exactly how many drawing David Hall did; it is an amazing number.  Consider that this particular scene is pretty early in the film.  The scene with Alice playing with Dinah is identified as sketch #10, and this is sketch #446, and we're barely 1/3 of the way through the story!
Also like the previous two drawings, this was selected for inclusion in Surprise Package, and the notations on the bottom of the 'board confirm that.  But there is a new notation not present on the first two, "4 color wash", and if you look at page 47 from Surprise Package, indeed it has had a color wash applied to it.  You can tell it is not a watercolor by the quality of the color, very flat and even compared to David Hall's beautiful watercolors.
There appear to be several instances of a color wash having been applied throughout the story, but this is the only concrete example of a side by side comparison that I have.

Palés Tweedle Figure

And the hits just keep on coming!  Another new figure discovered, this time from the Spanish company Palés.  A Tweedle!
And he looks good too.  Much better than all the other Palés figures we've seen so far.  This little guy still eludes me, but one day...

Disneyland Alice in Wonderland Attraction Ticket - Stub Style

In honor of today's 55th anniversary of the Alice in Wonderland attraction at Disneyland, I present to you one of my quest items.  The named attraction stub-style ticket!  Yeah baby!
I didn't even know if this thing existed, having never seen one, nor was it pictured on the ticket pages over at Vintage Disneyland Tickets.  So imagine my pleasure (gonzo excitement is more like it) when I finally found one!
Since there is no indication of Adult or Child on this ticket, I'm guessing that by this time ticket booth tickets were a single price, but I would defer to any of the ticket experts on that point.  I have similar tickets for the Mad Tea Party, but they are marked as Adult or Child.  But then again, the tea cups are an opening day attraction, whereas the Alice dark ride didn't open until 1958.

Aerial Snapshot of Disneyland Alice Attraction - June 1962

I love dated photographs, but I hate those photos in the 1980s and 90s where the date is burned into the image, I much prefer these older photos where the date is in the border.
I believe this is my only aerial photograph of the Alice attractions.  Some clever Skyway passenger took this very nice shot of the Caterpillar cars on the vine.  These days vintage photographs are the only way to see this attraction the way it was meant to be.

Alice Gazes in to the Stream Animation Drawing

Beautiful drawing of Alice as she gazes into the stream as she concludes her song "In a World of My Own", just before she sees the White Rabbit in the water's reflections.
Lots of notations on this drawing talking about how the frame will need to move as the point of view switches to the water.
And that concludes this series!  Whew!

White Rabbit Introducing the Queen of Hearts Animation Drawing

"Her Majesty, the Queen of Hearts! . . . and the king".
Very nice drawing of Mr Rabbit in his herald costume holding his trumpet.

Background Layout Drawing of the Forest Where Alice Meets the Tweedles

Alice has just left the Caucus Race and is still chasing after the White Rabbit, when he runs through this wood.
Alice follows, but stops in a clearing wondering where he's got to.  Thus we meet Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
The layout is for a larger background than can be seen on screen all at once, so I had to utilize my limited Photoshop skills to create this mosaic of the background.

Background Layout Drawing of the Tulgey Wood Sign Post Trees

Another favorite scene is when Alice first enters the Tulgey Wood and she encounters all the various signs suggesting which way she should go.
With this much advice, no wonder Alice was confused.  Kinda like driving on the East coast...

Rotoscope Background Layout Drawing of the Mad Tea Party Table

This is something I hadn't seen before, what appears to be a rotoscope of the Mad Tea Party table, but with no characters.
It is difficult to tell because the Mad Hatter and Alice fill a lot of the screen during this sequence, but I believe this is the background for which this layout was created.

Singing Pansies Animation Drawing

A very cute drawing of two of the six singing pansies from the All in the Golden Afternoon song, during the sequence when Alice is singing and her voice is about to break.
This drawing is of the middle row of pansies, you can tell by the shape of their chins.  Interestingly, the pansies were animated singing the song, but in the final released version their voices have been removed and you can only hear Alice's voice.
More's the pity :-)

Queen of Hearts Rose Tree Layout Drawing

"We planted the white roses by mistake!"  Well, that's nothing a little paint won't fix.
There are some subtle differences between this layout and the final background, but all in all it matches up quite nicely.

I just love this stuff, don't you?

Queen of Hearts Preparing to Strike Her Hedgehog Animation Drawing

Another animation drawing of the Queen as she plays croquet, this time as she prepares to make her stroke.
I feel for the poor hedgehog.

Queen of Hearts with Flamingo Animation Drawing

What a great drawing.  This is a clean-up drawing, but what's cool about it is the addition of the effects rendering of the flamingo being snapped into position.
When transferred to a cel, this is created using a technique called Dry Brush.

March Hare Animation Drawing - Who's Dinah?

Another great March Hare drawing from the Tea Party scene, this time the March Hare has just finished saying "very interesting" when Alice is telling her story about her arrival in Wonderland.
At this moment he's just on the verge of saying "Who's Dinah?"
